Risks and warnings and for Azithromycin

Azithromycin can cause severe health issues, and the risk level is high in people of specific groups. Before you start taking treatment with Azithromycin, inform your doctor if you are allergic to other macrolide antibiotics.

Allergic reactions

This medication can cause a severe allergic reaction, including life-threatening problems such as anaphylaxis (closing the throat) and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS). You need to consult the doctor if you notice painful blisters on the body, swelling, rashes, or trouble breathing after taking Azithromycin.

Liver damage

It is scarce but possible that this medication can cause severe or life-threatening liver damage. The risk is higher if you have a history of liver problems. Look out for the following symptoms and tell your doctor if you are dealing with:

  • Nausea, vomiting;
  • Unexplained stomach pain;
  • Pale stools, dark urine; or
  • Yellowing of the skin with eyes

Intestinal blockage

Intestinal blockage in infants younger than six weeks administered Azithromycin has been reported. Typically, this medicine is not under the recommendation for use by young children. But if the doctor prescribes this medication to your newborn, keep looking for vomiting or fussiness while feeding.

Heart rhythm problems

Azithromycin can rarely cause a severe heart rhythm issue known as QT prolongation. The risk is higher in people older than 65 years and those who have pre-existing QT prolongation, a history of arrhythmias, or taking other medications that may cause similar heart rhythm issues.

Severe diarrhea

Similar to other antibiotics, Azithromycin can also cause diarrhea because it gets rid of the bacteria in your guts. This diarrhea is rarely caused by Clostridioides difficile, a contagious bacteria that can lead to life-threatening dehydration.

If you have Clostridioides difficile (C. diff), wash your hands with soap for 20 seconds often or use a different bathroom from anyone sharing your washroom until you are better. To prevent this condition, you may take probiotic supplements while going through treatment with Azithromycin.

Myasthenia gravis

If you have pre-existing myasthenia gravis, using Azithromycin can worsen the symptoms such as difficulty breathing and muscle weakness. Ask your medical healthcare provider for alternative medication to avoid this medical condition.

Remember that Azithromycin does not treat syphilis; it even obstructs showing symptoms if you have a current syphilis infection. Syphilis in the early stages can cause infections of the cervix and urethra. Hence, it is essential to get treatment for syphilis on time.

If you are taking Azithromycin for any sexually transmitted disease or infection, ask your doctor for a syphilis test too.
